2016 REUs and Interns arrive at Bigelow

By: Lauren McCarthy, Science Communications intern

This week, Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences welcomed 27 new summer interns! Students from colleges and universities all over the United States will conduct research projects as part of Bigelow’s REU program. Research topics will include ocean acidification, arctic microbial communities, marine viruses, oyster parasites, and phytoplankton genetics, just to name a few. Each student will be mentored by a research scientist at Bigelow.

Next week, each REU student will continue with laboratory work and give an introductory presentation of their research project to their peers and other mentors at the end of the week.

Other interns will be involved in non-REU research projects, and with the IT and Communications departments.

All interns are looking forward to an enjoyable and fulfilling summer at Bigelow Laboratory!
